USA Pickleball Announces Golden Ticket Tournament in Greensboro:
The fastest-growing sport in the country is landing in Greensboro. Welcome to Pickleball Town!
By early 2025, the Greensboro Complex will house 40 state-of-the-art pickleball courts, giving Greensboro one of the largest portable indoor pickleball facilities in the US.
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is played with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Its accessibility and ease of play make it an excellent sport for athletes of all ages and skill levels.
Participation in pickleball is surging, increasing by 233.5% through 2023, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.
Greensboro landed its first major Pickleball Tournament: USA Pickleball's Golden Ticket national qualifying event, which will take place in late May.

- Pickleball was invented in 1965 on a small island near Seattle, WA by three dads whose children were bored with their usual summer activities.
- The name is rumored to come from one of the founders' dogs, a Cocker Spaniel named Pickles.
- Greensboro is in the middle of the US Region with the largest number of pickleball players. The South Atlantic Region includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC.
- As of January 2024, the United States had nearly 12,000 pickleball sites with more than 50,000 courts, according to USA Pickleball Places to Play database.
- That database also reports North Carolina has more than 1,500 recreational courts.
